International author, environmentalist and chef highlight day two of BC Shellfish and Seafood Festival

Comox Valley, BC – Delegates and international seafood lovers enjoy another packed day at the BC Shellfish and Seafood Expo. Today’s sessions include, seminars and panel discussions on sustainability certification, aquaculture best practices, processing and consumer trends.

World renowned author, environmentalist and chef, Barton Seaver will take the stage at noon. Seaver was appointed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the United States Culinary Ambassador Corp. in 2012. He is also the Director of the Sustainable Seafood and Health Initiative for the Centre for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard University.

“We’re very fortunate to be able to attract this caliber of educator to the province,” notes Richard Hardy, President of the Comox Valley Economic Development Society. “The Festival attracts international media, buyers, producers and Pacific Northwest seafood leaders, drawing well deserved attention to this important industry and creating awareness of the BC Seafood industry,” he adds.

Both the international seafood buyers and media were welcomed to Comox Fisherman’s Wharf this morning to tour the docks and learn about BC wild fisheries. They were joined by Mayor Paul Ives and Councillor Maureen Swift, Town of Comox, and representatives from the Comox Valley Harbour Authority as well as local fisherman.

The BC Seafood and Shellfish Festival is celebrating its 10th year with the biggest event ever. This event also recognizes the start of BC Seafood Month across the province. You can except to see more BC seafood on your plate at restaurants and in grocery stores, including IGA, Country Grocer and a variety of other chains on both Vancouver Island and the Mainland.

The largest event of the Festival is the crowd-pleasing Comox by the Sea Celebration on June 18 from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. featuring celebrity chef demonstrations, competitions, interactive booths and incredible seafood tasting stations.
